Having an enthusiastic artist in the house, we use a lot of crayons, which means we are left with a lot of broken or stubby pieces of crayons. Instead of throwing them away I love to recycle crayons by melting them. It has turned into one of those things I do every few months. You can melt crayons into different shapes using Silicone Molds. If you were having a party and the theme was Lego for instance, you could melt the crayons into Lego molds and put them in the party bag or melt them into hearts and give them to your child’s friends for Valentine’s Day or use a spooky pumpkin mold and hand them out on Halloween instead of candy. There are endless options you can do with your little one when you melt crayons.

To get the kids involved with this fun craft, ask them to arrange the broken crayons in the trays/molds that you are using. You can either put the same colour in each mold or use multi – colours the choice is yours. We have done several of each in the house and the kids always seem to use the solid colour ones.

  1. To get started Preheat your oven to 150 degrees.

2. To remove any paper from the crayons, you can soak the crayons in water for a few minutes and the paper slides off. It is so much easier and quicker than peeling each one.

3. Place crayons into your silicone mold of choice or muffin tin. Break any bigger pieces of crayon into smaller pieces.

4. Place tray in oven. Melting time varies from brand to brand. It took me 10 minutes to melt our crayons. Once they were melted I placed the tray in the freezer. Once they are frozen they pop right out of their mold.
